Pizza Steak Sandwiches in the Slow Cooker

There is truly nothing easier than throwing food in a crockpot in the morning and coming home to an awesome smelling house and dinner DONE!

Eating gluten free prevented me from using a bun but I enjoyed this over sweet potatoes.  Sweet potatoes have much more flavor than a plain old bun anyways.  The flavors of the sweet potatoes and the pizza flavored meat went well together.

The only thing I would change would be to add a bit of red pepper flakes to bolden the flavors a bit.  It was delicious but a bit mild.

Pizza Steak Sandwiches in the Slow Cooker
Adapted from Eat at Home

2 - 2 1/2 chuck roast, trimmed of visible fat
6 oz. pepperoni
1 large onion, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
1 red pepper, chopped
2 - 15 oz. cans diced tomatoes
1 tbsp. garlic, minced
1 tbsp. oregano
2 tsp. basil
Salt and pepper to taste
Provolone or mozzerella cheese slices

Place meat in slow cooker.  Add the rest of the ingredients, except for the cheese.  Cook on high 5 - 6 hours or low for 7 - 8 or until meat can be shredded. Serve on buns or over potatoes if you're gluten free.  Top with cheese slices.

  2. I really do love my slow cooker - I can't believe I only started using one so recently! Your pizza steak sandwiches sound delicious, and I like the idea of serving them with the sweet potatoes for their nutrition, as well as the fact that it makes the recipe gluten free :) Thank you for sharing this post with the Gallery of Favorites.

  3. Yum! I didn't realize you are now eating gluten free...by choice or necessity? We also eat a lot of gf in our house, as the hubby has some stomach issues when he eats it:(

This slow cooker dish looks great!

  4. What a great combination of flavors! I like how you served yours over sweet potatoes. We don't eat gluten, so I love discovering new ideas for serving food that normally go with bread.

  5. Yum! You know what else I might add? Some pepperonichini and some of the brine from the jar. I am hoping chuck roast is on sale this week! :D

    Happy Friday Debbi!

  6. This is so different! I once tried to be brilliant and make pizza sloppy joes (kinda similar to this but with ground beef) and it was a huge failure. I was so disappointed I didn't try again with any changes. Glad to know it can be done! They look so good.

  7. It looks good, even on a bed of mashed sweet potatoes. I love a little kick to my food so I would probably add the pepper flakes too.

  8. Debbie, I love this idea...question - did you use regular pepperoni that you had to cut up yourself (you know the greasy one!) or turkey pepperoni? I think I would like to try this out as it will be so easy for dinner on a weeknight!
